THE SOUND OF MUSIC at 1532 Theatre

  • 1532 Bristol Elton Rd Bristol, England, BS8 1SJ United Kingdom (map)
One of the movies’ all-time hits, one of the all-time great pictures. It restores your faith in movies. If you sit quietly and let it take, it may also restore your faith in humanity. It does this with infectious wit, with consistent gaiety, with simple and realistic spirituality, with romance of heartbreak and heartmend. This is set against the most beautiful scenery you have seen in your life. ‘The Sound of Music’ is quite a picture

DOORS: 18:00 | EVENT BEGINS: 18:30

We’re delighted to present our first ever screening of the musical sensation, The Sound Of Music, this December, to coincide with its 60th anniversary!

Join us at 1532 Performing Arts Centre to celebrate the Oscar-winning classic, following Maria, the Von Trapp family and their remarkable story through a songbook of timeless classics. The film will be introduced by Festival Director Owen Franklin, and there will also be a very special live medley performed by our friends at BLOC Productions, Bristol’s premiere musical theatre club. As anyone who attended our March 2025 screening of Les Misérables can testify, BLOC’s singers are a stunning complement to the main movie, and a joy to hear live.

Whether you’re discovering it for the first time or rewatching it for the fiftieth time, experiencing this heartwarming favourite on the big screen is a magical way to start the festive season.

About The Film

1965 | U | 174 mins

Based on an incredible true story, The Sound Of Music follows the free-spirited Maria as she studies to become a nun in 1930s Austria. When her convent sends her to act as the governess for Captain Von Trapp’s seven children, Maria slowly wins over the hearts of the household with her infectious joie de vivre - but can Maria navigate her growing feelings for the Captain, and can the family withstand the growing political unease that is starting to creep into their idyllic alpine setting?

Contains brief, very mild threat

About The Performers

BLOC Productions is an award-winning musical theatre company that has been dedicated to performing light opera and musicals in Bristol for over 90 years. Their mission is to promote the performing arts in the region and to provide opportunity and encouragement for talented amateur performers.

BLOC Productions is currently the only non-professional company able to perform once a year at The Bristol Hippodrome, where they enjoy a reputation for producing shows of a highly professional standard. They were the first company to be offered the rights to Evita by The Really Useful Company and one of the first companies to be offered Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

In 2025, BLOC Productions was invited by Cameron Mackintosh and Music Theatre International (MTI) to be one of only 11 clubs across the UK to be granted a one-off amateur licence to perform one of the UK amateur premières of the full version of Les Misérables - “Let The People Sing” in 2025, as part of the iconic show’s 40th Anniversary celebrations. Some of the cast performed a fantastic live medley at Bristol Film Festival’s screening of the film adaptation in March at the stunning St George’s concert hall, and we’re delighted to welcome them back this December.
