THE CABINET OF DR CALIGARI at St Mary Redcliffe with Live Music

  • St Mary Redcliffe Redcliffe Way, Redcliffe Bristol, BS1 6RA United Kingdom (map)
Arguably the first true horror film, ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ set a brilliantly high bar for the genre – and remains terrifying over a century after it first stalked the screen
— Rotten Tomatoes

DOORS: 19:00 | FILM STARTS 19:30

After the centenary screening of Nosferatu last year, we’re returning to St Mary Redcliffe this Halloween season for a special showing of another masterwork of early horror cinema, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, with an original accompanying score performed live.

The quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema, the film is a nightmarish, visually striking descent into madness at the hands of a twisted hypnotist and his sleepwalking protégé. It’s widely regarded as one of the most influential films ever made, with a huge impact on the development of horror, film noir and arthouse cinema.

The live soundtrack will be performed by Bristol-based quartet Minima, who specialise in spellbinding contemporary accompaniments to silent films. Their score for this seminal film is an event not to be missed!

About The Film

1920 | U | 74 mins

In the shadowy German town of Holstenwall, the enigmatic Dr Caligari presents the somnambulist Cesare, who can allegedly predict the future of the carnival-goers. By night, Caligari uses his powers of hypnosis to compel Cesare to ensure that his predictions come true…

About The Performance

— Barbican Centre, London

Minima are a Bristol-based four-piece group, with instrumentation including cello, double bass, baritone guitar, acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, autoharp, dulcimer, synthesizer, glockenspiel and drum kit.

Formed in 2006, Minima perform in cinemas and art centres, as well as music and film festivals, playing original live soundtracks to silent films; their music is a 21st-Century interpretation of the images of silent film.

Highlights over the years have included performances at Glastonbury Festival, the Barbican Centre, BFI Southbank and the Transylvania International Film Festival. After their incredible performance at this venue last year accompanying our centenary screening of Nosferatu, we’re delighted to be hosting them again for another night of atmospheric cinema.
