“There are sequences in this that are among the scariest you will see all year [...] “Hokum” rises above so many films like it because it takes its character’s plight seriously, never winking at the audience, even as the impossible happens. Dismiss the folk tales at your own peril”
DOORS 15:30 | FILM STARTS 15:45
It’s back… This Halloween, we’ll be celebrating the 10th anniversary of our infamous Horror In The Caves series, screening a range of classic and contemporary horror films, from old favourites to first-time Festival appearances, including a day dedicated to folk horror! Enter through a hole in the wall on Redcliffe Wharf, grab a drink from our pop-up bar to steel your nerves, and step foot inside one of Bristol’s most unusual and exclusive locations for another season of classic and contemporary horror movies. We look forward to welcoming you – if you’re brave enough…
We’re very excited to present one of the first post-cinema public screenings of 2026’s hideously entertaining Hokum as part of our folk horror weekend. Irish filmmaker Damian McCarthy has quietly gained a cult following with Caveat and Oddity, and his third film is a riotously entertaining spooktacular exploring grief, seeking closure at all costs, and an unhealthy dose of folklore and things that go bump in the night. It scared the hell out of the Festival team, and if you missed it earlier this year, then now it’s your turn - thank us afterwards..!
Please note: Redcliffe Caves is a unique event space - we strongly recommend all guests read the ‘Venue & Event Information’ tab at this bottom of this page prior to booking.
About The Film
2026 | 15 | 107 mins
American author Ohm Bauman is struggling to complete the final novel in his acclaimed trilogy. After a seemingly paranormal experience, he decides to travel to Ireland to scatter his parents’ ashes at the Bilberry Woods Hotel, where they honeymooned. Ohm hopes the break will also lift his writer’s block - but as he learns of some deeply unsettling local legends surrounding a witch, increasingly dark turns of events force him to confront the demons in his own life.
Contains strong horror, strong language, strong violence, suicide references
About The Location
Redcliffe Caves are one of the most fascinating locations in Bristol. Originally created to mine sandstone for glass in the 17th Century, these caves (technically a quarry!) have a rich and varied history, having been used by hermits, prisoners of war, and even as an air raid shelter. Now, they are accessed through a gate on the Harbourside, and are usually closed to the public - Bristol Film Festival hosts its annual Horror In The Caves cinema season inside the Caves every October, and are delighted to be launching this inaugural weekend of tours to allow more people to visit this incredible space.
