CRIMSON PEAK at The Mount Without

  • The Mount Without Upper Church Lane Bristol, England, BS2 8FN United Kingdom (map)
Its sombre sincerity and hypnotic, treasure-box beauty make ‘Crimson Peak’ feel like a film out of time – but Del Toro, his cast and his crew carry it off without a single postmodern prod or smirk. The film wears its heart on its sleeve, along with its soul and most of its intestines

As part of our Valentine’s-adjacent screenings, we look forward to welcoming you to one of Bristol’s most dramatic venues – the stunning Mount Without! Formerly a church dating from the 15th Century, this recently revived creative space on St. Michael’s Hill boasts a rich history. Enjoy a drink in the Crypt, before watching films in the Grade-II listed nave, which has been stunningly restored to combine stained-glass windows and centuries-old masonry with a unique contemporary twist.

For those of you looking for something a little different to the usual romcom February fare, we’re pleased to present a double bill of Guillermo del Toro films at The Mount Without - the master of modern Gothic fantasy is the ideal fit for this atmospheric venue! Second up is the beautiful and spine-chilling gothic horror-romance Crimson Peak. Inspired by the great haunted house films and with hints of both Hammer Horror and Daphne du Maurier, it’s a refreshingly melodramatic twist on Gothic romance with a healthy dose of spooky goings-on that will keep your heart pounding!

About The Location

There has been a church on this site for over 900 years, with the original structure dating back to the Norman era; the unusual name comes from an era when it was outside the city’s walls. After major renovation works in the late 18th Century, and again after damage from the Bristol Blitz, the church finally closed its doors and was deconsecrated in 1999. The building was the victim of an arson attack in 2016, but after years of restoration work it has now reopened as one of Bristol’s most unique and characterful new event spaces.
