Bristol Film Festival is delighted to present a 30th anniversary screening of the beloved comedy Withnail and I, and is thrilled to announce that Paul McGann will be joining us for the occasion. In addition to the film screening, Paul will discuss the movie and its impact with Anna Smith, one of the country’s leading film critics, with an opportunity for some audience Q&As.
This special event takes place at the Arnolfini, and will screen the recently restored print from the original camera negative, supervised and approved by director of photography Peter Hannan. It’s a rare opportunity to hear firsthand about this cult classic from one of the stars, and to enjoy it on the big screen as it was intended to be viewed. Tickets are limited, so be sure to get yours while stocks last.
Paul McGann’s acting career has spanned 35 years. He rose to prominence as the eponymous Monocled Mutineer, and his extensive film and television credits include the eighth Doctor Who, Horatio Hornblower, Luther and of course his role as Marwood (“I”) in Withnail and I. He is one of four brothers, all in the acting profession, and they have appeared onscreen together (portraying brothers) in The Hanging Gale.
Anna Smith is Contributing Editor at ELLE UK and is a regular critic for Sky News, BBC News, BBC Radio, Metro, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Sight & Sound, Empire, Time Out, Heat, New! and more. She regularly interviews actors on stage, on screen and in print. A former editor of dance music and women’s magazines, Anna went freelance to specialise in film in 2000. Anna is the Chair of the Critics’ Circle Film Section, the first female Chair since the legendary Dilys Powell 38 years ago.
Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and I (Paul McGann) decide they need a break from their lives as struggling out-of-work actors in Camden. Escaping London for the tranquility of a country home owned by Withnail’s flamboyant Uncle Monty, they discover the unpleasant side of the English countryside – with disastrous and hilarious consequences.
