The Talented Mr Ripley

1999 | 15 | 135 mins

In 1950s New York, struggling conman Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) is sent by a wealthy tycoon to Italy to persuade his son Dickie to return to the USA. Once there, Ripley becomes enamoured with the glamorous lifestyle that Dickie and his girlfriend lead, he resorts to increasingly sinister methods to ensure that this lifestyle becomes his own.

Starring: Matt Damon | Jude Law | Gwyneth Paltrow | Cate Blanchett | Philip Seymour Hoffman
Director: Anthony Minghella
Screenplay: Anthony Minghella
Producer: William Horberg | Tom Sternberg

THEY SAY: An intelligent thriller [that is] insidious in the way it leads us to identify with Tom Ripley – he’s a monster, but we want him to get away with it.” – Roger Ebert, 1999

WE SAY: The glorious backdrop of Italy and its impressions of la dolce vita can’t mask Matt Damon’s brilliantly unsettling performance as Ripley. As we (hopefully) welcome in the summer, Averys’ selection of Italian wines will make you feel like you’re on the sun-drenched coast too, but don’t be surprised if there are moments onscreen that nevertheless chill you…
