Paul Verhoeven’s futuristic action-satire follows 23rdCentury citizen Johnny Rico as he enlists in the Mobile Infantry to fight against alien aggressors known as Arachnids, or Bugs. As both species battle for their survival, Rico transforms from green soldier to hardened veteran, and a key player in the wider struggle for dominance.

STARRING: Casper Van Dien | Dina Meyer | Denise Richards | Neil Patrick Harris | Jake Busey | Michael Ironside

DIRECTED: Paul Verhoeven

WRITTEN: Edward Neumeier

PRODUCED: Jon Davison | Allan Marshall

THEY SAY: “Paul Verhoeven’s gonzo satire was destined, even designed, to be misunderstood. An action spectacle with the heart of a Grade-Z creature feature […] Starship Troopersis a wicked, acidic comment on how easily people can be convinced to trade freedom for security.”– Scott Tobias, The A.V. Club, 2012

WE SAY: At face value, it’s a loud and violent sci-fi action romp – but unlike some of the unfortunate victims of the Bugs, it’s anything but brainless. A wickedly satirical critique of fascism and militarism underpins this cult favourite – for example, the opening scene contains a chillingly accurate remake of a sequence from infamous Nazi propaganda film Triumph Of The Will.
