Donnie Darko

2001 | 15 | 109 mins

Donnie Darko (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a troubled teenager in surbuban America, with a difference: he has been informed in visions that the world will end in four weeks. As he tries to uncover the truth behind his dreams, he is influenced by three figures: Gretchen, his newfound love; a mysterious former teacher nicknamed ‘Grandma Death; a terrifying rabbit-shaped spectre called Frank, who begins to assert control over Donnie’s increasingly erratic actions.

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal | Jena Malone | Drew Barrymore | Maggie Gyllenhaal | Patrick Swayze
Director: Richard Kelly
Screenplay: Richard Kelly
Producer: Sean McKittrick | Nancy Juvonen | Adam Fields

THEY SAY: “Like gathering storm clouds, Donnie Darko creates an atmosphere of eerie calm and mounting menace —and stands as one of the most exceptional movies of 2001″ – Jean Oppenheimer, LA New Times, 2001

WE SAY: Hypnotic, haunting and utterly compelling, Donnie Darko is a must-watch – part horror, part mystery and part sci-fi drama, it defies easy categorisation. It’s all the more impressive that writer/director Richard Kelly was only 24 when he started production on the film!
