Do The Right Thing

1989 | 15 | 115 mins

Sal has owned a pizzeria in Brooklyn for decades, and keeps a ‘Wall Of Fame’ of famous Italian-Americans. When he refuses to add any black celebrities to the wall, accusations of racism and strained relationships within the community spill over into violence. On the hottest day of the year, tensions rise with the temperature.

Starring: Spike Lee | Danny Aiello | Ossie Davis | Ruby Dee | Giancarlo Esposito
Director: Spike Lee
Screenplay: Spike Lee
Producer: Spike Lee

THEY SAY: “I have been given only a few filmgoing experiences in my life to equal the first time I saw Do the Right Thing. Most movies remain up there on the screen. Only a few penetrate your soul. In May of 1989 I walked out of the screening at the Cannes Film Festival with tears in my eyes. Spike Lee had done an almost impossible thing. He’d made a movie about race in America that empathised with all the participants.” – Roger Ebert, 2001

WE SAY: Upon its release some critics were so shocked by Do The Right Thing that they feared it would incite race riots. They were, of course, proven wrong, but this film has lost none of its raw power. It melds anger and humour to captivating effect.
